Getting In Great Shape Is Not the Single Solution To Revolutionize Your Life--Develop Your Mind, Too.

I occasionally write things that are not in my best interest, but I think that makes my writing more trustworthy.
So, today, here it is…
Getting in great shape is not the single solution--or guaranteed way, to revolutionize your life.
I know I write about how important health & fitness are. It’s undeniable. However, it is possible to build up your biceps without building up your brain.
Arthur Jones, the founder of Nautilus Industries, said most bodybuilders were ‘little boys in gorilla suits.’
Jones was exaggerating, but I know some people well who got very big and strong, but their lives still were chronically lacking in important areas. Their physique didn’t land them better jobs, meaningful relationships, or most importantly, mental peace and happiness.
Physical development is important, but it has salient limits.
Get your mental workouts in, too.
Read books. Visit a museum. Challenge your own thinking. Journal deliberately and expressively. Get educated. “Unplug” and step back from the tedium of everyday life. Meditate and practice stress reduction. Join a personal-development group. Get out in nature. Learn another language. What’s important is making a real effort to deliberately develop your mind. Do the things that are right for you to be a more complete and integrated human being.
Otherwise, it is possible to be just a “gym bro,” which leaves a lot on a table. Why shortchange yourself and the world of the rest–and best, of your gifts?
